For many people, who they want to be and who they are based on their daily actions and habits are two different people. Having goals and ambition is great and almost everyone has them. In order to achieve them, we need to live under the identity of a person who achieves these goals and ambitions. This means our habits and daily actions need to match up with what drives progress towards our ambitions. We need to pioneer a path and conquer adversity through what is oftentimes the path of most resistance compared to our other options in life. If you’re not trending towards your goals, ask yourself if your daily actions align with the identity you are trying to create for yourself. If they don’t, you have your answer. Most people avoid discomfort at every opportunity. In order to live the life you’re capable of, comfort will come few and far between. This is how we continue to grow, learn, and progress towards our vision for our lives.
Auditing our identity
When we have goals and ambitions for success that we want to drive us in a certain direction, it’s vital that we audit our identity to ensure that we are executing on our necessary goals and actions daily. Success is about consistency, not reinventing the wheel. It’s about going through peaks and valleys, very very low valleys, but continuing to keep the faith in the tried and true path you are on. Success can sometimes feel like you’re smacking your head against a wall. Ruts are common, and getting yourself out of them can be difficult. Auditing our identity often makes sure that we are staying on track with our habits and actions regardless of the immediate outcomes. When success is involved, almost everything takes time to show the progress you’re looking for. Sometimes that progress takes weeks, months, or even years. This makes it extremely difficult to maintain consistency. It is human nature to expect instant gratification for our actions so we tend to look to reinvent the wheel at the first sign of obstacles. Consistency is painful. It is often the path of most resistance and motivation won’t get you too far down that road. It comes down to discipline and a relentless attitude to be successful. When we continuously audit our identity, these are the key indicators we’ll want to keep a lookout for. How are your consistency levels? Are you looking to reinvent the wheel or stay persistent?
Creating the right identity for your success
Most of the time, the path you are looking to blaze for success has been walked prior to you. This goes for every aspect of your life, physically, financially, personally, etc. The best thing we can do to come as close as possible to guaranteeing success is to mirror someone successful in the path you are walking prior to you walking it. For me, this has worked well in the fitness and financial aspects of my life. I have learned and followed the footsteps of mentors who have been where I am trying to go and following their process has led to results for me over time. I have picked up habits and daily actions and added them to my identity along the way. I know what has worked for others can also work for me if I apply their experiences to my own life. I understand that peaks and valleys are a part of the process, and although that doesn’t make things easier on me, at least I know that it’s all part of the process. This keeps me on track to not reinvent the wheel when a valley emerges. I know that with consistency and the right actions, I am continuing to live under the necessary identity to achieve my goals. Implementing this in your own life is simple but not easy. Mirror those who have walked the path of your desire prior to you. What did they do to become successful? We live in a generation where most of this information is easily accessible online for free through videos and books. Oftentimes, paid programs are offered for a few hundred dollars that give a few million dollars in value over time back to you. All you need is at your fingertips. It is your decision to implement the right things into your identity or not. Success is your choice. What will you choose?
